CAGBC Award Showcase: Presentation of Manitou a bi Bii daziigae

Join Partner Gabe Derksen for a virtual presentation at the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) Award Showcase on December 6, 2023 at 1:00pm (EST) where they will speak about Manitou a bi Bii daziigae – a 2023 CAGBC Award winner in the New Construction category.
Gabe will be joined by Michael and Sydney, Principals at Diamond Schmitt Architects. Together they will discuss how the team used Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) cladding; applied principles of carbon reduction; as well as incorporated Indigenous art to develop an inspiring space that unifies a 20,000 square foot heritage warehouse with a new 80,000 square foot centre for innovation at Red River College Polytechnic.

It is with excitement and pride that we welcome two new associates to Number TEN: Aaron Pollock in Winnipeg and Lance Steele in Victoria. They bring a wealth of experience, dedication, and passion to their work, and we're eager to see what they will do in their new leadership positions.
Aaron Pollock | Associate
Aaron first joined Number TEN as a summer student in 2015.
As an architect and project manager, Aaron is creative, disciplined, calm, and enthusiastic. He inspires confidence, and he balances speedy efficiency with measured thoughtfulness. He loves complicated design problems and thrives on complex projects.
Aaron’s design approach is bold, and he has a zeal for experimentation. He’s always ready to take a well-researched, thoroughly planned chance.
Lance Steele | Associate
Lance is a dedicated, well-rounded architect who approaches every project with focus and precision. With a degree in economics and a background as a planner, Lance brings a unique perspective to architecture.
His focus on the big picture allows him to develop elegant solutions that strike a balance between pragmatic needs and aesthetic beauty, and that are both user-friendly and efficient.
While Lance always takes his work seriously, he has a great sense of humour and is always ready with a joke and a smile.
Lance joined Number TEN’s Victoria office in 2015, and he has been providing high-value services ever since. His consistency, dependability, and straightforward approach keep his projects on course, and make him a pleasure to work with.
Canada Green Building Council’s 2023 New Construction Award

Number TEN, alongside Diamond Schmitt Architects, was honoured to accept Canada Green Building Council’s 2023 New Construction Award in Green Building Excellence for RRC Polytechnic Manitou a bi Bii daziigae.
“Manitou a bi Bii daziigae demonstrates in meaningful ways what can be accomplished in a spirit of innovation and collaboration. The conception, development, and certification of the rainscreen BIPV cladding system demonstrates a high level of commitment to sustainable design quality and performance, with benefits not only for the project but throughout Canada,” says Doug Hanna, the project leader for Number TEN.
“The adaptive re-use and restoration of the historic Scott Fruit building structure is emblematic of the type of deep energy retrofit work that will come to define our collective success in low-carbon design.” adds Gabe Derksen, one of the project’s architects.
- Designed to a LEED Gold standard (certification pending)
- Designed to look to the future while respecting the past. Indigenous design elements and artwork form a deeper connection with the site, its history, and the surrounding community.
- Clad with energy-generating photovoltaic glass
- Adapting an historic building kept 600 tonnes of CO2 in concrete and masonry from the landfill
- Targeted an ultra-low 100 kWh/m2 EUI. Photovoltaic system provides as much as 70%-80% of the daily building power requirement, and offsets approximately 18% of the overall energy use.
- New construction on a notable brownfield location; nearly 96% of the materials removed from the site were diverted from the landfill
- Rainwater harvesting system and low-flow fixtures significantly reduce water consumption
- Data produced from the building is available for student research

Number TEN Receives 2023 A4LE Pinnacle Award

Number TEN was honoured to receive the 2023 A4LE Pinnacle Award for the design of Legacy Park Elementary School in Weyburn, Saskatchewan.
The Pinnacle Award is awarded to the single most distinctive education facility in the Pacific Northwest Region. This program recognizes learning projects which positively impact teaching and learning and result from a sound planning process reflecting the needs and expectations of the community.
Legacy Park Elementary School is an 80,546 sq.ft. facility designed for 650 students and includes an integrated childcare centre (daycare). It is a unique 21st century learning environment physically connected to a city-owned recreation and cultural facility called the Credit Union Spark Centre.
Serving as a replacement for three ageing schools in Weyburn and the surrounding rural area, the design team was tasked with capturing the individual identities and culture of each student body and integrating elements of each into the new school.
The project’s goals were to:
- Design a new facility that will support and celebrate the integration of three existing schools within an innovative 21st century learning environment.
- Facilitate a shared vision of excellence between school and city stakeholders that takes full advantage of the joint-use nature of the facility’s site, design, and programming.
“Legacy Park Elementary School is a state-of-the-art 21st century design that lends itself to countless possibilities for best practice in education and will continue to serve the community of Weyburn in so many ways. We have so much to be thankful for already and I can’t wait to be a part of many LPES celebrations to come.”

A4LE is an interdisciplinary association of professionals working at the intersection of learning and place to drive the evolution of learning environments. Partners Christina Legris and Greg Hasiuk were on hand at the 2023 A4LE PNW Regional Conference in Vancouver, BC to receive the award.
Manitou a bi Bii daziigae Receives Brownie Award

Manitou a bi Bii daziigae has received a Brownie Award in the REBUILD category.
"Red River College brings economic, social and environmental benefits that accelerate the pace of regeneration within Winnipeg’s urban heart...This project exemplifies regeneration and renewal at multiple levels: reinforcing city planning and economic policy for urban renewal, adaptive re-use of a heritage structure, and the full remediation and repurposing of a brownfield building site."

Manitou a bi Bii daziigae wins Prairie Design Award

Number TEN was humbled to accept a Prairie Design Award of Merit for Manitou a bi Bii daziigae on Monday evening.
From the jury: This building ensemble is conceived as an inclusive learning and research hub for emerging IT industries in consultation with the RRC community, industry leaders, and Indigenous stakeholders. Its ambitious design embraces the principles of community connectivity, inclusion, and collaboration through the adaptive re use of a 20,000-square-foot heritage building, an 80,000-square-foot addition, a skywalk and a student plaza. This project incorporates leading sustainable technologies and energy performance targets, including: a continuous photovoltaic panel skin exterior; an expansive skylight that channels daylight through a five-storey atrium to its interior spaces; and a ‘live’ operational performance data feed to its users. This project also incorporates Indigenous art and symbolism; the mural on the soffit area of the projecting cornice, while counter-intuitive, is a welcoming gesture to those who enter this facility.
To create welcoming, inclusive, collaborative spaces embedded in our places and communities is a privilege. To be recognized for this work is an honour.

Lawrence Bird’s article describes the design and cultural intent of the space, and reflects the hope that the building represents for Winnipeg’s downtown.

Outstanding Woman in Construction of the Year Leslie Myers

We are proud to announce that Number TEN Associate Leslie Myers has been named Outstanding Woman in Construction of the Year by the Vancouver Island Construction Association.
This award recognizes a woman who has significantly and positively impacted the construction industry on Vancouver Island.
Leslie’s commitment to integrity, honesty, and quality are apparent in all that she does. She is a dedicated volunteer, mentor and leader always willing to share her time and expertise.
“She truly believes and shares that if anyone comes to work with a keen attitude to learn and demonstrates quality and integrity in the work they do, that they can be successful in the industry. Leslie knows that there isn’t anything that women can’t do and she demonstrates this belief daily,” says Colleen McConnell from the Construction Foundation of BC.
Leslie was nominated by Number TEN partner Barry Cosgrave. Ten years ago, Leslie joined Number TEN as junior designer. Since then, she has become both the leader of our Interior Design Studio, and an associate. Barry says, “She is tireless in her pursuit of knowledge and improving her professional skills, volunteering for industry committees and mentorship for Interior Design students. Her work ethic and people skills have allowed her to connect to people she works with both in the office and in particular clients, end users, contractors, subtrades and other professionals.”
We are lucky to have her strength, vision and entrepreneurial spirit on our team, and in the construction industry. Congratulations Leslie!
