Arviat Senior School

Located in the hamlet of Arviat, Nunavut, Arviat Senior School is a school with a heart. The facility combines community-based learning, integrated government programs, and a unique student population that created an opportunity to nurture their creative and academic spirit in new and exciting ways.

The challenge for Arviat’s new high school was to engage both the community and its students in a way that encourages participation, enthusiasm and achievement. The clustering of culturally themed curriculums such as language studies, art and performing art recognizes the high priority placed on retaining Inuit culture. The school’s simple circulation system allows for easy student navigation and optimum staff supervision. An interior amphitheatre space, called The Kiva, connects both the main and second floors. The library and computer room on the second floor are adjacent to The Kiva and are visually connected by continuous glazing.

The Government of Nunavut’s Early Childhood and School Services Division operates a media centre within the school. A fully integrated audio/visual system is designed for media centre staff and students to share skills and resources to record, edit and produce various communication media.<

The school's design encourages connections between students and staff and fosters a feeling of community. Most classrooms share a resource room that acts as flexible teaching and meeting space, reducing teacher isolation and encouraging staff collaboration.
