Endayaan Omaa “Home is Here”

Treaty One Development Corporation, Treaty One Nations Inc.

A visual journey through Naawi Oodena

Naawi Oodena, “centre of the heart and community,” is the future home of a landmark residential project, Endayaan Omaa, “home is here.” Endayaan Omaa is Treaty One Development Corporation’s first housing project on the land, Canada’s largest urban reserve. Situated at the intersection of Kenaston Boulevard and Taylor Avenue, the nine-storey residential building will be the first large scale marker of the overall development. The building will introduce 260 residential suites to Winnipeg’s market and be open to the community. It will be inclusive and welcoming to a diverse audience while celebrating First Nations culture and Indigenous design excellence through iconic Indigenous architecture. The building will exemplify the rigorous design guidelines of the Naawi Oodena site, set out by Treaty One.

Endayaan Omaa’s massing is designed to help soften the overall scale through stepping; starting lower at the southeast and gradually rising toward the west. A U-shaped configuration creates a central courtyard that fosters a sense of community, visually and spatially connecting residents to the landscape.

Within the courtyard, the dappled green walls evoke light filtering through the forest canopy, a reference to both the nearby Assiniboine forest and the tree-lined streets of the surrounding neighbourhood.

Scattered green panels rise up the walls in a random pattern. Together with the windows, they break up the regularity of the structure, create a sense of movement, and root the building deeper into the landscape of the site.

On the east, west, and north facades, a darker grey cladding contrasts with the vibrant inner courtyard. The main entrance is highlighted with copper cladding and integrated artwork, layering narrative into the building’s expression. This visual journey draws the eye upward to the ninth-floor community room—a fully glazed residents’ community space, offering residents expansive views of the surrounding landscape and the broader Naawi Oodena site.

The project is being led by Treaty One Development Corporation, designed by Number TEN Architectural Group, and built by Bockstael Construction.
