Land Acknowledgement
Winnipeg
Number TEN Architectural Group in Winnipeg, Manitoba works on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional homeland of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Anisininew Nations, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, on the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. We are situated near the ancestral meeting place where two rivers meet, on the lands traditionally known as Win-nipi, in the Cree language meaning ‘muddy waters.’ We acknowledge that the source of water is from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.
This land has been repeatedly modified, damaged, and polluted through acts of construction some of which have and continue to dislocate communities, and has impacted the health of the land itself.
We want to recognize architecture as complicit in our colonial history and ongoing treatment of Indigenous peoples. We strive to be allies in Truth and Reconciliation and see with open eyes the present-day injustices, inequities, and violence impacting the health, wellbeing, and safety of Indigenous peoples throughout our province, particularly women and youth.
This statement is an expression of hope, respect and caring for Indigenous peoples, who continue to steward the land for future generations and protect our environment. We offer this acknowledgment in the belief that it will help us be mindful design professionals, architects, and friends.
This offering is not static but living and will evolve as we learn together.
Victoria
Number TEN’s Victoria offices are located on the traditional territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) People, known today as the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations. We acknowledge that we live, work and play as visitors on lands belonging to the Lək̓ʷəŋən People since time immemorial and we honour their ongoing connection to the land.
Our Truth & Reconciliation Journey
Number TEN has been working with Indigenous Communities in Western and Northern Canada for over 50 years. As such, we are committed to our Truth & Reconciliation journey as we strive to meet the TRC Calls to Action. To advance our education and understanding, we are participating in the Truth2Action Program by Legacy Bowes.
The program has been designed to help us meet our responsibility to improve relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. To do that, we endeavor to gain a better understanding of the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada from pre-contact to today.
All Number TEN staff and partners are participating in the 10-chapter knowledge program consisting of ten one-hour learning sessions that include multi-media, online quizzes, and online coaching which is self-paced through a virtual learning campus. The chapters were created in association with an Indigenous development team. Number TEN team members will leave the program with an action plan on how they can make a difference.
Recognizing the ongoing journey towards greater understanding and reconciliation, we took a step forward by becoming a Partner to the City of Winnipeg’s Indigenous Accord in 2022.
