Garden City Collegiate Addition

The addition and renovation to Garden City Collegiate resulted in the joining and overall enhancement of two adjacent school facilities. The design objective was to create an open, inviting and unified focal point for the combined facilities; to enhance student services and amenities; and to create flexibility for future development and program delivery. The addition creates a new gymnasium and the conversion of the old gym to a shops and a theatre space. Expansive glazing on the south wall of the student commons distinguishes the addition as a new public space and provides ample daylight and views to the commons, the linking corridor and the gymnasium beyond.

Overall efforts were made to reduce energy consumption and realize the substantial opportunities for cost savings in the building operation. The project investigated a comprehensive set of building energy upgrades with a targeted energy savings of 33 percent better than a conventional building constructed to the Model National Energy Code for Buildings.
