Welcome to: La Plas Taanshi kaa-Ishipamachihoyaahk The Place of how we have, and do live — a name gifted by Elder Verna DeMontigny. The adaptive reuse project transforms the historic building located at the iconic intersection of Portage Ave and Main St into a new heritage centre for the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF).
The main and mezzanine levels act as the heritage centre including supporting office spaces and collections management in the lower levels. The 2 upper levels will be offices for various MMF departments. The exterior experience is reimagined with a new accessible ramp to the main floor.
The large art installation at the front entrance is a new façade screen that drapes in and around the neoclassical façade with a new story through Metis beadwork by artist, Jennine Krauchi. The design blends the building’s decoration with natural motifs found in traditional Métis beadwork. Hundreds of coloured aluminum chains form the screen, a reference to the moment Louis Riel stepped on the surveyor’s chain, forever changing Manitoba’s history.
