Transforming the Tunnels
The Duff Roblin Informal Learning Spaces project is part of a new initiative by the University of Manitoba to provide lounge and informal learning spaces to students and faculty outside of typical program space. The Duff Roblin ILS is a renovation of the tunnel space that connects the Machray Hall, Duff Roblin, University College, and Buller buildings by introducing a mix of student gathering spaces and individual study areas. This project aims to renew the tunnel space from it’s previously unused square footage into something that provides valuable collaboration space to all students and faculty.
Underutilized areas at the University of Manitoba were identified in order to accommodate students in their movement across campus from learning environment to learning environment. This was done through the development of flexible opportunity spaces where empty open spaces have existed in the past. With the integration of seating arrangements, stand-up tables, perches and other features, these spaces were developed to maximize the user experience and provide supportive ancillary spaces that promote communication, studying, collaboration and connection among students. There are a variety of spaces included within this renovation and they provide critical solutions to a variety
of work groups that will improve the overall experience for students well into the future.
The underutilized areas of the University’s tunnels were transformed into vibrant, modern spaces for study, collaboration, and relaxation—designed with student life in mind.
